Last Wishes: How to Write a Letter of Final Instructions

    September 10, 2023Estate Planning

letter of last instructionsPlanning for life’s end can be an emotional task, but it’s an important one. A well-crafted letter of final instructions serves as a vital roadmap for your loved ones during a challenging time. In this blog, we’ll discuss the purpose of this document and the key elements to include in it.

    Overview

A letter of final instructions is a non-legally binding document that provides crucial details about managing your affairs after your passing. Although it does not substitute for a legal will, it augments it, offering additional guidance for those left behind.

The main objective of this letter is to streamline tasks and decisions for your family during a time of grief. It clearly outlines your wishes regarding your belongings, assets, and last rites, helping to prevent potential misunderstandings.

So, what essential components should your letter of final instructions include?

Components of Letter of Final Instructions

1.) Funeral and Memorial Preferences: Specify your preferences for your funeral or memorial service. Include your choice of burial or cremation and any special rituals or ceremonies you wish to incorporate.

2.) Important Documents’ Location: Guide your loved ones to where they can find your important documents. This can include your will, insurance policies, property deeds, financial statements, tax returns, and birth certificate.

3.) Financial Details: Give a comprehensive overview of your financial landscape. List your assets and debts, including bank accounts, investments, credit cards, mortgages, and loans. Always include account numbers and institution contact details.

4.) Digital Presence: In today’s digital world, your online accounts need attention too. Provide details about your email accounts, social media profiles, and other online platforms. Don’t forget to include usernames and passwords.

5.) Personal Belongings: Outline the distribution of personal items with emotional significance. Your will usually covers major assets, but this letter can specify who should receive items of sentimental value.

6.) Key Contacts: Include a list of people who can help in settling your affairs, such as your attorney, financial advisor, accountant, insurance agent, and other important contacts.

7.) Pet Care Instructions: If you have pets, designate a caregiver and provide information about their diet, health requirements, and any special needs.

8.) Personal Messages: Use this letter to leave personal messages to your loved ones, offering comfort and closure during a difficult time.

While writing a letter of final instructions may seem daunting, consider it a final act of care. It alleviates the burden on your family and ensures your wishes are known. However, it should accompany, not replace, a legally binding will or estate plan, and you should update this letter as your circumstances change.
